U.S Military Attack Venezuela

On Saturday with the support of the Trump administration, U.S. military launched an attack on Venezuela on January 3rd. According to reports, attacks aimed at military installations in and around Caracas- the capital caused severe damage to property and affected civilians. The U.S. Army’s Delta Force, an elite special forces unit, carried out the operation to capture President Nicolás Maduro and his wife.

The U.S. military started establishing a presence months before the massive attack. They deployed the USS Gerald R. Ford aircraft carrier and other naval assets in the Caribbean and launched deadly strikes on over 30 vessels allegedly carrying drugs.

President Maduro and wife, captured by U.S. military, were first taken to Brooklyn where they stayed for hours and then flown to New York. They are now held in a federal detention center and will appear before U.S. court on Monday. The U.S. government imposed serious charges, including drug trafficking and links to terrorist organizations. However, Madaro and his wife deny the charges.

The Supreme Court announced Delcy Rodriguez as interim President of Venezuela following the removal of Ex- President Maduro. While speaking on current situation, Rodriguez said:

Our country aspires to live without external threats, in an environment of respect and international cooperation. We extend the invitation to the U.S. government to work together on a cooperation agenda, oriented to shared development, within the framework of international legality and strengthen a lasting community coexistence.

Internationally mixed reactions are seen to the Venezuela attack some considering it to be legally comparing it with Panama. Officials and critics are condemning the attack, calling it illegal, the streets of Venezuela are deserted and residents seem confused. But miles away people of Venezuela living in South Florida celebrate the action and are chanting the slogans of freedom.
